Wichita New Year's Eve Guide 2026-2027: Events, Fireworks & Where to Stay
Discover Wichita's unique New Year's Eve celebrations with insider tips for families, foodies, and nightlife lovers.
September 30, 2026
Wichita brings a fun mix of big-night energy and easygoing winter charm to New Year's Eve. Catch the Wichita Thunder take on the Rapid City Rush at INTRUST Bank Arena during a Margaritaville-themed game night, with puck drop at 6:05 PM. Or dress up for dinner, live music and dancing at The Ninth Floor Club + Venue, where the party runs through a midnight champagne toast. Which sounds more like your kind of countdown?
There's more to enjoy around the celebration, too. The Keeper of the Plains offers a striking riverfront stop, and its winter Ring of Fire ceremony is scheduled for 7 PM, weather permitting. December days are short and chilly, so pack warm layers and plan your evening around the events you choose. With downtown spots close together, Wichita makes it easy to shape a New Year's trip around live action, local sights and a little sparkle.

What people say about celebrating New Year's in Wichita
The Keeper of the Plains looked stunning all lit up for New Year's Eve, and watching the 'Ring in the New Year' fireworks show from there felt so special. We grabbed some amazing BBQ brisket from B&C Barbeque before the show-it was so smoky and tender! To top it off, locals were super friendly, and the vibe near the river was warm and welcoming even in the cold.
Old Town Wichita was the best place to celebrate! We spent the evening hopping between cozy pubs like Public, trying craft beers and Wichita-style thin-crust pizza. The live music at the Wave outdoor venue was fantastic, and everyone was dancing and counting down together-it felt like the whole city was one big party!
We stayed at Hotel at Old Town, and the historic charm of the building was such a great touch. There was a special New Year's Eve jazz performance in the lobby, which we enjoyed after having dessert at Milkfloat-a slice of their coconut cream cake was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Watching people release wish lanterns by the Arkansas River was so beautiful and peaceful before midnight.

INTRUST Bank Arena: Catch a Margaritaville-Themed Hockey Night
Trade the usual countdown plan for live hockey at INTRUST Bank Arena. The Wichita Thunder face the Rapid City Rush on December 31, with a 6:05 PM puck drop and a Margaritaville-themed promotional night. It's a lively pick if you want a big crowd and on-ice action to start your evening. Specific themed activities and ticket options are available through the team and arena pages, so check those as your trip gets closer.
Reserve event parking through ParkMobile if you're driving. Arena-owned lots are Lots 1-4; nearby independent lots are also available. Keep the clear-bag policy in mind: backpacks and diaper bags are not allowed. Choose a clear bag up to 14 x 6 x 14 inches, a one-gallon clear plastic bag, or a small clutch up to 5.5 x 8.5 inches.
The Ninth Floor Club + Venue: Dance Into the New Year
For a dressed-up night out, head to The Ninth Floor Club + Venue for dinner, live music, dancing and a midnight champagne toast. The downtown party runs from 6:30 PM to 12:30 AM. A buffet is served at 6:45 PM, Lucky People performs at 9 PM, and a DJ keeps the Wichita nightlife moving after that. There's also a photo booth and a late-night snack station at 10 PM.
Tickets cost $125 per person for members and $150 for non-members. Advance tickets and reservations are required, and space is limited. The venue is in the same downtown area as the Thunder game, but this party offers a full evening program and a midnight toast. The Ambassador Hotel is across the street if you want to stay nearby; the event does not list a room-and-party package.
Keeper of the Plains: See Wichita's Winter Ring of Fire
Add a uniquely Wichita stop to your evening at Keeper of the Plains Plaza, where the 44-foot sculpture stands at the meeting point of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers. During winter, the plaza's Ring of Fire ceremony lights its firepots at 7 PM, weather permitting. The site is open around the clock, and this free outdoor tradition gives you a memorable way to experience the city beyond its downtown nightlife.
December 31 sunset is listed at 5:20 PM, so plan for a dark, chilly visit. Wichita's winter temperatures can dip below freezing, which makes warm layers, gloves and shoes with good grip a smart call. Check local updates before heading out, since the ceremony depends on weather.

1. Keeper of the Plains: Take in the Riverfront at Dusk
No organized New Year's Eve fireworks display or official viewing area is listed for Wichita in 2026-2027, so treat these spots as scenic places to enjoy the evening rather than guaranteed fireworks viewpoints. Keeper of the Plains Plaza makes a memorable winter stop, with the 44-foot sculpture at the meeting of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers. The seasonal Ring of Fire ceremony is scheduled for 7 PM from November 1 through March 7, weather permitting. It is a firepot ceremony, not a fireworks show. Dress warmly for the riverside, and check local updates before you go.
2. Downtown Wichita: Keep Your Evening Close to the Action
Downtown is a handy base if your plans include the Thunder game at INTRUST Bank Arena or the New Year's Eve party at The Ninth Floor Club + Venue. The arena and club are both downtown, and the Ambassador Hotel is across the street from The Ninth Floor. That makes it easier to pair an event with a nearby place to stay, without needing to travel far after midnight. Downtown is a lively choice for the city atmosphere, but it is not a designated fireworks-viewing area.
3. Exploration Place: Add a River District Stop
Exploration Place sits beside the Arkansas River and can be a useful daytime stop before your evening plans. Its indoor science exhibits offer a weather-friendly activity, and the museum lists hours through December 31. Holiday hours can vary, so check ahead before visiting. The river setting gives this area a different feel from downtown's event venues, but no official fireworks viewing spot is designated here. If you're hoping to see fireworks, check Wichita's event listings closer to your trip.
How to Get the Best Fireworks View
1. Check for event updates
Look for city or event announcements closer to December 31 before choosing a viewing spot. A listed event location does not automatically mean fireworks can be seen from there.
2. Plan for cold weather
Wichita's December temperatures average highs around 46°F and lows around 25°F. Wear warm layers, gloves and shoes suited to an outdoor winter walk.
3. Sort out your ride early
No special late-night New Year's Eve transit plan is listed, so don't count on regular evening service continuing after events. Check current transit updates and parking options before heading out.
Family-Friendly New Year's Eve Activities in Wichita
Wichita can make a relaxed winter getaway for families, with a mix of hands-on outings, indoor stops and open-air spaces. The key is to build your plans around the weather and check holiday hours before you set off. December days are short, with sunset around 5:20 PM, and average temperatures can fall below freezing at night, so warm layers are a must. You can keep the day flexible: choose an activity everyone enjoys, leave time for breaks, and have an indoor backup in case the weather turns. These ideas work well for a family visit around New Year's, though individual venues may adjust their schedules for the holiday. Looking for something active, historic or artsy? Wichita has options that let kids explore at their own pace while adults enjoy a change of scene.
Explore Wichita's Old West at Old Cowtown Museum
Make history a hands-on outing at this outdoor living-history museum, with more than 50 historic and recreated buildings across a 20-plus-acre site. The exhibits explore Wichita and the High Plains from 1865 to 1880, giving families plenty to see as they walk around. Winter hours are generally Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM, with last admission one hour before closing; holiday hours may differ. General admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors 62 and older, and $10 for youth ages 5-17. Children 4 and under and members enter free. The site is large, so bundle up and allow time for walking.

Go for a Public Skate at Wichita Ice Center
An indoor skating session can add some active fun to a winter trip. The center's public sessions welcome skaters of different ages and skill levels, with music, games and concessions. Session times vary and can change, so check the calendar before you go, especially around the holiday. Admission and skate-rental prices should also be checked ahead of time. The center lists public-skate purchases as non-refundable and non-transferable, so make sure your plans are set before booking.
Take a Calm Art Break at Wichita Art Museum
For a quieter indoor outing, explore a collection of more than 10,000 works spanning historical and contemporary American art. General admission is free, while special exhibitions are listed at $12. The museum offers stroller-friendly access, ramps, elevators and accessible parking, which can make a visit easier for families with younger children or mobility needs. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM, with Friday hours until 9 PM. Holiday schedules can vary, so check opening details before adding it to your New Year's plans.

Upscale Dinner Spots
For a polished dinner, consider Siena Tuscan Steakhouse, which pairs Italian and steakhouse dishes with a full bar and reservation options. Newport Grill is another upscale pick, with seafood, waterfront seating and private dining. Both offer a more dressed-up setting for a special meal. Check each restaurant's holiday hours and menu before you make plans.
Where to Eat with Kids
For a relaxed meal with kids, Texas Roadhouse and Abuelo's list highchairs and full-service seating. Texas Roadhouse serves American steakhouse fare, while Abuelo's offers Mexican and Southwestern dishes. These casual choices make it easier to find something for different tastes. Check holiday hours and ask about the menu when booking.
Budget-Friendly Options
Traveling on a budget? Il Vicino Wood Oven Pizza offers pizza and Italian dishes in a casual setting, while Wichita Brewing Co & Pizzeria has pizza and pub-style options. Both are listed in the $$-$$$ range, so compare menus to keep your meal within budget. Holiday hours may differ from regular schedules, so check before heading out.

Downtown Wichita
Downtown is the easiest base if your plans include the Thunder game or a midnight party. Both listed New Year's Eve events are downtown, so staying nearby can save you a late-night ride. Holiday transit plans and hotel rates can change, so check both before booking.
The Ambassador Hotel is across the street from The Ninth Floor Club + Venue, making it the clearest nearby lodging option for party guests. The hotel and venue do not list a bundled room-and-event deal. No New Year's Eve room rate is provided here, so compare dates and total fees directly before you commit. For a lower-cost stay, check other downtown listings and weigh the price against transport and parking.
Waterfront Area
The Waterfront area can suit travelers who want a different base from the downtown event district. You can look for a hotel that matches your budget and preferred room style, then compare its distance to your planned activities. Specific hotels, New Year's Eve packages and rates for this area are not included in the available trip details.
For a comfortable stay, check room size, parking fees and cancellation rules before booking. Families may want a pool or breakfast option, while couples might prefer a quieter room. If you choose this area, plan your ride downtown in advance. Wichita has not published a special late-night holiday transit plan for this date, so don't assume buses will run after your event.
Old Town and Other Neighborhoods
A stay outside downtown may offer a calmer setting, but it can mean more travel to the New Year's Eve events. Compare neighborhoods by your full trip plan, not just the nightly price: include parking, rides and the time it takes to get back after midnight. Specific hotels and target-date rates in these areas are not listed here, so check current booking options before choosing.
For budget-minded travelers, flexible dates and refundable rates can make it easier to compare deals. For a special occasion, look for a room with the comforts you care about rather than paying extra for features you won't use. Wherever you stay, confirm holiday check-in details and arrange your return ride ahead of time.
New Year's Eve Planning Tips for Wichita
Book Your Plans Early
Reserve tickets for The Ninth Floor party in advance; space is limited. Check Thunder ticket availability and book your hotel early, too. Compare the full cost, including parking and transport.
Dress for the Cold
December averages are 45.8°F (7.7°C) for the daily high and 25.4°F (-3.7°C) for the low. January averages are 43.9°F (6.6°C) and 22.5°F (-5.3°C). Wear warm layers, especially for outdoor stops.
Plan Your Ride Home
Late-night holiday transit details are not available yet, so don't count on regular service after events. Check Wichita Transit updates, arrange a ride, and review traffic or road-closure notices before leaving. For arena parking, reserve through ParkMobile.
Pack Light and Keep Your Phone Ready
INTRUST Bank Arena allows clear bags up to 14 x 6 x 14 inches, one-gallon clear plastic bags, or small clutches up to 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Backpacks and diaper bags are prohibited. Charge your phone and save your hotel and ride details.
